Becoming a Member of the Congregation
Why
become a member?
To Join this Unitarian Universalist congregation is to
become part of a living community. That means getting
involved in its activities, identifying with it, and
claiming its heritage-not something ever to be taken
lightly. Membership is not required for participation in
most activities, but there may come a time when you hear a
voice inside saying, "This is my religious home. I want to
support it." If so, it may be time to think about making the
commitment of membership.
Responsibilities and commitments of membership
There are no abstract beliefs you must profess to be a
member. That is a matter of individual conscience. But there
are some responsibilities and commitments we share.
- Participation. Participation
in Sunday worship and other events gives us a shared
core of common experiences.
- Learning and growth. Our
community is strengthened when each member deepens their
own spiritual and philosophical underpinnings, as well
as learning about our UU traditions.
- Right relationship. Our UU
Covenant challenges us to affirm the inherent worth and
dignity of every person. Being a member of a UU
congregation challenges us to live this out in our
dealings with one another.
- Shared ministry. Everyone has
their unique gifts of leadership and service to offer
our community. The Fellowship offers a wide variety of
opportunities for volunteer activity- and the truth is,
our deepest friendships are often forged in working
together.
- Financial support. The
Fellowship is supported entirely by the pledges of its
members and friends. Our annual program plan is based
upon how much we raise in pledges from members and
friends during our annual pledge drive and when new
people come in mid-year. This means that all of us need
to give generously each according to our circumstances.
