Generous with our Faith:
New Member Service with Pancake Breakfast to Follow!
UUs are often shy to share Unitarian Universalism with others, lest we proselytize. However, on this New Member Sunday, we witness how many newcomers are excited by what we have to offer and how important it was for them to discover Unitarian Universalism. Today we’ll talk about how we might be generous with our faith, so we don’t keep this beautiful gift to ourselves. Join us as we welcome new members to our fellowship and stay after service when our children will be preparing a pancake breakfast for everyone to enjoy.

*Meet Our New Members!

Renee Chiucchiarelli
I was born and raised outside of the motor city (Detroit). I lived on a lake when I was young and loved everything about water. I was a competitive figure skater and thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of skating. I ended up going to college for international trade and teaching ice-skating for 20 years. I was married and then unfortunately divorced and became a single mother in my mid 30’s. My daughter and I moved to Thousand Oaks/Newbury Park when she was starting middle school. I started surfing, working hard, living and loving the California lifestyle while doing my favorite job of being a mother.
My career path in trade led me to be the Director of global customs at Raytheon technologies. However, the last three years I’ve been having quite a few spiritual awakenings which were new for me. I got the original Covid in 2020 and sometimes we have to be brought to our knees to make changes.
Thankfully, I met Jill Schlauss and she introduced me to the UU’s. I remember the first service I attended, I cried because I felt a warmth that I had not felt in so long. I am looking for a community, more in depth spiritual connections and opportunities to grow in service and personally. I now work in a trade training capacity and I am healing both inside and out. Thank you for welcoming me here.

Vanessa Otto
Vanessa Lee Otto was born in England, but came to Canada then America as a child. She went to college in California and married her college sweetheart. Her natal family kept moving and now all live in Australia.
Vanessa worked many years for Xerox in El Segundo, as a manager of Integration and Test, and later as their software process improvement guru. In retirement, she gained an additional college degree at the new CSUCI, but is too busy with her volunteer jobs to get a real job in Biology. At this time she is active with the AAUW and the Somis Thursday Club and serves as Treasurer for four organizations. They know her well at the bank!
Vanessa has three children and seven grandchildren, and was recently widowed. Her gift to the future is all the scientists and engineers that she has nurtured. In the meantime, she enjoys reading, gardening and knitting and would love to share those interests with new friends.
The Shojaei Family (Bo, Emily, Olivia, Charlotte & Catherine)
We are the Shojaeis (Show-jai), established in the central coast in 2016. Emily grew up in Colorado, was raised in the Catholic Church, and led an adventurous young adult life. Before moving to LA she was warned she would go out to CA, fall in love and never return to God’s country (CO). Bo immigrated to the States from Iran at the age of 2. He was raised in a non-religious, probably implicitly atheist, family. He gravitated toward science and technology in his education and career. As he gets older life continues to teach him how much he doesn’t know, and he appreciates that. We welcomed our first child, Olivia in 2017. Eighteen months and eight days later Charlotte was born. Eighteen months and eight days after that Catherine was born. Teddy, whom you have not met, is our good dog and completes our family. We are excited to find a spiritual home; a place through which we can serve our community, and our daughters can be exposed to different beliefs and their questions and curiosities will be encouraged. We like that no matter where one is on their personal spiritual journey our family can spend time together each week at Chalice to worship, reflect, and practice gratitude.
We welcome all of our new members with open arms!
