Santa Susana Field Lab Cleanup

2022-02-12, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm (Saturday, February 12)

with

Dr. Robert Dodge and Denise Duffield, Physicians for Social Responsibility

and

Melissa Bumstead, Parents vs Santa Susana Field Lab

Featured in the documentary “In the Dark of the Valley”

Topics to include:

  • Santa Susana Field Lab meltdown & other accidents
  • Public health consequences
  • Cleanup efforts and barriers
  • How to help

“In 1959, an unconfined partial meltdown of a sodium reactor at the Santa Susana Field Lab caused such a devastating leak, that many consider it to be  the worst nuclear disaster in U.S. history.  Studies have shown that the radiation released at SSFL was 260 times greater that the radiation released at Three Mile Island…

The meltdown was concealed from the public eye for 20 years before being uncovered and the contamination never fully eradicated.”   SSFL Documentary “In the Dark of the Valley”

Robert Dodge, M.D., is a family physician practicing in Ventura.  He is the President of Physicians for Social Responsibility Los Angeles (psr-la.org) and serves as the Co-Chair of the Committee to Abolish Nuclear Weapons of PSR.  PSR is the U.S. Affiliate of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War who received the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize and is a partner organization of ICAN, recipient of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize.

Denise Duffield is Associate Director of Physicians for Social Responsibility-Los Angeles and directs its nuclear threats program.  She also leads PSR-LA’s efforts to ensure a full cleanup of SSFL, a former nuclear and rocket testing facility near LA.

Melissa Bumstead became an “accidental activist” after her four-year-old daughter was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of leukemia in 2014.  Melissa met other families at CHLA whose children also had rare cancers and learned they all lived within miles of SSFL.  Melissa began a change.org petition that now has over 740k signatures for the cleanup of SSFL.
