The Price of a Free Press: Is Journalism Worth Dying for?

ReporteroWebpage

Reportero, a documentary film by Bernardo Ruiz, takes a look at the risks journalists face working in Mexico.  The film follows Tijuana based veteran journalist Sergio Haro and his colleagues at Zeta, an independent newsweekly, as they boldly cover the news under threat from Mexico’s drug cartels.

When Felipe Calderón became president of Mexico in December 2006 he launched a government offensive against the country’s powerful drug cartels. Since then over 40 journalists have vanished or been slain.  Amidst the violence and increased risk, Reportero shows us the character necessary to pursue such life threatening work.

Filmmaker Bernardo Ruiz has directed programs including the American Experience: Roberto Clemente for PBS as well as programs for MTV, Discovery, Travel Channel, Planet Green and The National Geographic Channel.  He is the winner of the ALMA Award for Outstanding Made for Television Documentary and winner of the top short documentary prize at the 2003 Morelia International Film Festival in Mexico. Bernardo Ruiz went on to found Quiet Pictures in order to produce aesthetically innovative and socially relevant documentary films for all platforms.

After the film we will have a facilitated discussion addressing the question: Is journalism worth dying for?
