Minister’s Message December

Listen to your life. See if for the fathomless mystery that it is. In the boredom and pain of it, no less than in the excitement and gladness…because in the last analysis all moments are key moments and life itself is grace.” Frederick Buechner

As our Soul Matters collective shares, Unitarian Universalists love puzzles. We proudly announce that we are the religion that loves questions and questioning. Or to put it another way, we love figuring out life’s mysteries.

But what if mystery isn’t just something to figure out? What if it’s also something to be listened to? This is the lesser recognized call of our faith. Being a people of mystery isn’t just about engaging life as a marvelous puzzle. It’s also about allowing yourself to be spoken to by life’s wonder.

This month, as we engage with the theme of mystery, I invite us to be curious and open to the mysteries that life offers us. During services, we begin by exploring what it means to surrender to the mystery in our lives. Later this month we’ll explore the mysteries of being a Unitarian Universalist, the gifts of the darkness and eventually the mystery of Christmas. We hope you and your family will join us for our Christmas Eve service at 6 pm on Monday, December 24. I also invite you to join me for our second “Cultivating Joy and Resilience” class on Sunday, December 9, from 2 – 3:30, during which we’ll be focusing on the practice of Mindfulness. Becoming mindful of our habits, our fears and desires, allows us to surrender our being to an organic flow of life. I look forward to sharing the awe and wonder of the mystery of existence with you this December.

In faith,

Rev Nica
