The Sun Will Rise Again

After a long hard night, when it seems like the light may never return and the trials of life appear too great, nature teaches us that the sun will rise again. We embrace this message of Easter and resurrection through our Unitarian Universalist lens by celebrating our Flower communion that reminds us of the beauty of life and rebirth. Join us for this celebration of hope and abundance.

Good Friday Service

1 Service at 8:00pm
March 30 – 8 pm – Good Friday Service – Going Within – Reverend Nica Eaton-Guinn
Good Friday gives us the opportunity to go within and honor the quiet, dark places in our lives. Together we mourn the inevitable suffering in life. This intimate service will take place at CVUUF at night to honor the ending, mysterious time represented by Jesus’ death on the cross, before emerging into rebirth and renewal on Easter Sunday. Join us for a UU exploration of this Christian tradition.

The Courage of Immigrants

To journey away from family and a familiar country to a new environment requires courage. Join Evan Junker, Executive Director of the UU Justice Ministry of California as we explore the stories of immigrant families who have come to the US to make a home. Learn how our Unitarian Universalism calls us to act in solidarity and find out how you can make a difference.

Courageous Living

March 18 – Courageous Living – Reverend Nica Eaton-Guinn
Life presents us with many challenges. We need courage in the face of illness, loss, divorce, unemployment, poverty, depression and many other circumstances. For some of us it takes courage just to get up and face another day. Today we will be exploring how to find courage when the path forward is daunting or unclear. Where and how do we find the resources to live courageously?

Our Courageous Youth

Our young people today are faced with a fractious, scary, fast world. It takes tremendous courage to grow up in this time of 24/7 media, non-stop communication and alienation. Join us as some of our High School YRUU group, also known as the Young Religious Unitarian Universalists, share their stories of how and where they find courage to face the difficult task of becoming adults in today’s world.

Spiritually Courageous

Our mission says we are ‘spiritually courageous people’. But what does it actually mean to be spiritually courageous? This week we explore how to delve deeply into theology, ask ourselves hard questions, and perhaps find some courageous answers. We may even dare to explore the multi-faceted, powerful word ‘G*d’! Join us to find out!

Still I Rise

“Up from a past that’s rooted in pain, I rise” writes Maya Angelou.
This service celebrates the importance of resilience, determination, and perseverance throughout life, especially for women and marginalized populations. Inspired by the Maya Angelou poem “Still I Rise” we are called to rise again and again in the face of hardship and struggle. Come be inspired in this service, so you too may continue to rise up in the face of difficult life circumstances.

Black and UU

“Black Like Me”, first published in 1961, is a nonfiction book by white journalist John Howard Griffin recounting his journey in the Deep South of the United States, at a time when African-Americans lived under Racial Segregation. Black and UU is my take, my experiences, my life living within the milieu of our denomination and liberal white America. This journey has been both profoundly beautiful and incredibly painful. At the end of the day is there truly a place for cross cultural, interfaith human family togetherness? I think so. Our Unitarian Universalist faith provides a model for right relationship with the entirety of our world. The only question is, are we ready to do what it takes to make this happen? Join us as we will surely enter into a dialogue unlike any you have been part of before. Rev. Bailey is the called minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Verdugo Hills in La Crescenta, CA.

Persevering with Love in Times of Hate

Martin Luther King Jr. taught us again and again that we cannot fight hate with hate. We must persevere with an attitude of love, and non-violence, even when it’s difficult. Love is our true essence. Love is our highest call as humans. Love is the healing balm that calms discord, counters hate and brings us back to wholeness. Join us to find ways of persevering with love.

450 Years of Unitarianism

We celebrate the 450th anniversary of the founding of Unitarianism in Europe through the Edict of Torda in Transylvania. Unitarianism has persevered through centuries of persecution by Catholicism and then communism in what is now Hungary and Romania. We honor our history as a radical faith 450 years ago, a faith that is still on the leading edge of social change, inclusivity and religious freedom today.
