Minister’s Musings

Fresh from Study Leave and vacation, Reverend Nica returns to us with her Minister’s Musings on this time of reflection and renewal. Join us to welcome her back and hear some of the insights she gleaned from having time for deep spiritual exploration.

This I Believe

Our “This I Believe” service is based off the international organization “This I Believe”, which engages people to write and share their core values that guide their daily lives. It has been a long tradition in our congregation. We’re excited to hear from 2 new members and 1 longtime member of our congregation as they share deeply what they value most in life. Join us for new insights in our midst.

No Justice, No Peace!

We are used to hearing this chant of protest– as a demand for justice. Pursuit of justice is a core UU Principle, and yet we’ve also heard since childhood that “no one said life is fair.” When such injustice hits closer to home—like say, a diagnosis of cancer, how do we find peace when there seems to be no justice? UCLA oncology chaplain, Michael Eselun, will explore this territory.

Wisdom of the Ages III

In a new version of this popular service, a panel of adults ages 20, 40, 60, and 80 builds on the classic essay “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.” What more do we learn in the course of growing up and growing older? Join CVUUF’s own Isabella Dake, Brandon Gass, Pamela Lopez, and Bill Robinson for inter-generational perspectives on the lessons of maturity.

All Are Called – Reflections from Our Wider Movement

Over the last few months, Reverend Nica and several CVUUF members have attended our UU Regional Assembly in Portland and the UUA General Assembly in Kansas City. Join them to hear reflections about our wider faith and learn new ideas, learnings and inspiration about our national movement.

A Sunday Chat with Your Minister

Curiosity and connection are key to a healthy minister-congregation relationship. In this interview style service, Reverend Nica will respond to questions the congregation has submitted to her. Join us for this fun, revealing and authentic summer service.

Journey to Reconciliation

Last month, 6 members of our Fellowship traveled to the “Peace and Justice Summit” held in Montgomery, Alabama. Celebrated speakers and artists shared wisdom for the openings of the Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration as well as the National Memorial for Peace and Justice created by the Equal Justice Initiative. Founded by attorney and civil rights activist, Bryan Stevenson, the EJI works to advance truth and reconciliation around race in America and to protect basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society. Join us to hear stories from this life-changing journey.

The Blessings of Brokenness

Our fourth Unitarian Universalist principle calls us to a free and responsible search for truth and meaning. In this service, we will explore the ways that search is satisfied by an embrace of the blessings we unearth within our broken places. Maggie Burbank Yenoki received her Master of Divinity degree from Drew Theological School in Madison, NJ and served the Unitarian Fellowship in Morristown, NJ as Summer Minister. She is a Candidate for UU Ministry and served for two years as Minister to the Sepulveda Unitarian Universalist Society, fondly known as ‘The Onion.’ Maggie currently serves the Monte Vista Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Montclair, as Intern Minister. Maggie is also a certified Hospital Chaplain and practitioner in The Art of Death Midwifery through Sacred Crossings.

A Father’s Blessing

Some of us had wonderful fathers who have given us an enduring legacy. Others had difficult relationships with their fathers or were raised without a father. On this Father’s Day, we look at the way fathers impact our lives. Whether you’re a father or were influenced by your own father, what legacy can we celebrate or transform? What blessings have fathers, our own or others’, shared with us?
