In these days of overwhelming social, environmental and political challenges, we can easily succumb to exhaustion and despair, finding ourselves in deep need of renewed inspiration and motivation. As we begin this month of Growing Together in Renewal we’ll explore how renewal often comes through returning to something we have left behind or forgotten. How do we move forward by reconnecting and remembering?

In her compelling personal talk, Sarah Khan dares the audience to take a chance to get to know a Muslim, just as she dared to reach out to the very people she feared as a victim of Islamophobia. Sarah Khan is a Public Speaker, Trainer & Activist. Her ongoing work in engaging local communities in confronting Islamophobia has brought her to schools across Southern California, to TEDx, Al Jazeera’s online channel, local newspapers and guest spots on local television, radio, as well as a feature in Forbes Magazine.

“Mysteries abound where most we seek for answers,” wrote Ray Bradbury. Come explore the intersection of imagination, science, and the infinite nature of the universe, journeying into the spiritual and the scientific in equal measure.

Systemic Racism – How Well Meaning People Perpetuate the System

Recent events at the Unitarian Universalist Association have brought to light how even our well-meaning and high intentioned faith sometimes unwittingly participates in systemic racism. Together with over 500 UU congregations around the country, this service will explore how well meaning people, who would never think of themselves as racist, can nevertheless contribute to such a system. Come with open minds and hearts to learn how we can be more mindful and aware of internal biases, micro-aggressions and ways in which we might address these issues.

No Fake News Here

As newspaper readers, many were appalled that both The Los Angeles Times and The New York Times were banned from White House briefings. When the press was called “the opposition party,” Chalice Players, our congregational theater company, decided to make their voices heard. “No Fake News Here” will present three taped stories showing how press reports can affect a health care bill, a wall being built, and a journalist being fired.
